Fun & Games

We wanted a day you'd actually remember rather than sit politely through — so we've booked a live band, an artist who'll draw you where you stand, and built a photo game you can play from your pocket. Here's what's in store.

Live in the evening

The RUSH

We love live music. Not a playlist, not a laptop — a room full of people and a band loud enough to make standing still feel like a decision. So we booked The RUSH.

They're a Manchester showband fronted by Gavin Jones, backed by players who've toured with the likes of Take That, Michael Bublé and Beverley Knight. Brass, guitars, and a repertoire that rakes across six decades of songs everyone in the barn knows the words to.

They'll open with our first dance and play through the evening. If there's something you need to hear, put it in on the songs page — we're building the requests list from you.

Drawing through the day

Roxana, Live Illustrator

Roxana of Wedding Painter Manchester will be moving through the day with a sketchbook, drawing guests where she finds them.

She trained in decorative arts and fashion design and worked as a fashion director before this, which is why the illustrations look the way they do — long-limbed, fashion-plate portraits that catch what you wore and how you stand rather than just what you look like. Each one takes about five minutes.

You don't need to book, pose or do anything clever. If she asks to draw you, say yes — the drawing is yours to take home.

SnapTable — The Photo Game

The bit we built ourselves. There's a QR code on every table: scan it and you're playing for that table.

How it works. Take photos, upload them, earn points for your table. Occasional prompts appear — someone laughing, the best-dressed guest, something blue — and matching one is worth more. The leaderboard and a live mosaic of everything you've shot run on the screen in the barn all night.

Why. Every photo app we looked at was a passive dumping ground. We wanted the photographs we'd never get otherwise — the table you were on, at the moment you were enjoying it — and the fastest way to get those is to make it a competition.

The prizes. There's collective prizes on the night, including drinks tokens. Tokens appear on your phone — show the screen at the bar. Top of the leaderboard at the end of the night takes the bragging rights, and every photo comes back to us afterwards.

One more thing

There will be a quiet area for kids away from the noise and dancing, where there'll be a TV with kids shows playing. They'll also get an activity pack during the wedding breakfast to keep them occupied - as much as we're looking forward to the speeches, we're not so sure the little ones will be as keen.
